ABSTRACT:
This paper explains the determinants of an individual’s decision to enlist in the military. National defense spending, unemployment rates, interest rates, and the consumer price index are included as independent variables in conjunction with other factors such as the higher education price index, individual disposable income, and the political party of the President of the United States. Annual data was collected for the period 1965-1995 accounting for two major wars in America’s recent history (Vietnam and the Gulf War). Results include a positive influence of Republican Presidents and national defense spending on enlistments; and a negative impact of disposable income, unemployment rates, and the higher education price index.
