ABSTRACT:
The policy reform programme (Doi Moi) implemented in Vietnam with the intention of moving towards a socialist market economy turned the households that relied heavily on cooperatives for work and income into self-contained economic entities with responsibility for income-generating activities. As an immediate effect of this change, women of working age were no longer required to go out to work regularly. The workload of women varied according to the manner in which the economic activities developed during the post-reform period. In the village where involvement of women in income-generating activities increased substantially, their ability to influence the household decision-making also increased. Withdrawal of subsidies and deterioration of the environment had some negative effects on the women. A greater involvement of children in economic activities has led to a higher school drop-out rate of which majority were girls.
