ABSTRACT:
The passion of St. Varus of Egypt is considered in detail. In particular, it is argued (1) that the military unit to which he is contributed may constitute a corrupt form of the name of a genuine historical unit, the Cohors IX Tzanorum; (2) that the name of the location in Palestine which became the centre of the cult of St. Varus should probably be restored to read Jezreel.
