ABSTRACT:
This introduction to Madagascar--the Great Red Island--emphasizes its uniqueness in fauna and flora, culture and humanized landscapes. It also deals with its contradictions: surrounded by a warm ocean, the Malagasy have nevertheless looked inward, not ouward. Another contradiction is that most of the population derives its sustenance from no more than five percent of the national territory.
