ABSTRACT:
The paper concerns a 'Great Penitential Kanon' which is mentioned in a redaction of the 'Life of St. Cyril of Turov' (12th C Russia) and attributed to the Saint therein. This kanon is commonly regarded as lost, but the author examines the possibility of identifying parts of it with an extant alphabetical hymn, hitherto thought to be of South Slavic origin - the syllabic 'Penitential Alphabet' -, and argues that such an identification finds weighty structural, textual and thematic support in the hymn when it is compared to other works by St. Cyril. The identification, if correct, would indicate a surprisingly creative, yet "Byzantine" and learned way of treating poetic form in at least one Kievan Russian ecclesiastical writer.
