ABSTRACT:
Discusses the emergence of sociology of sport as a new subdiscipline of physical education. Describes the nature of the issues which created a schism between these two areas of enquiry. Examines how physical educators and sport sociologists differ in orientation, focus and approach. Points out differences in the nature of their research questions and the kinds of knowledge generated. Discusses the impact of sport sociology's aim to debunk myths on its relationship to physical education. Suggests that attempts should be made to increase communication and understanding between physical educators and sports sociologists.
