ABSTRACT:
Examines the development of the scholarly study of sport from ancient times to the present day. Suggests that little scholarship was to occur until the present century and that serious work concerning its historical and philosophic dimensions has only begun recently. Demonstrates that development of the historical and philosophical approaches to the study of sport, the essential nature of each and the relationship that occurs between the two and suggests the progression and continuity of their relationship.
