ABSTRACT:
This article brings forth the virtues of play which is characterized as an activity voluntarily undertaken for intrinsic purposes. Extols the value and clarifies the definition of play. Definitional clarification is provided, differences between work and play are discussed, and three different views of play are presented. Suggests that play is the impulse for, the gate to and the exercise of freedom. Play liberates from the mundane so that the true player commits himself totally to the situation at hand and the opportunities to experience possibility. Two additional perspectives are offered: a systematic theological orientation and an aesthetic perusal of the structure and nature of play.
