ABSTRACT:
Explores the ethical status of competitive advantages that might be gained through performance-enhancing substances. Considers whether there is justification for prohibiting their use in sport. Discusses what is meant by unfair advantage. Identifies two areas of athletic advantage in which the unrestricted use of performance enhancers would raise concern: 1) an advantage over other athletes, and an advantage over the sport. Explains the problematic nature of arguments opposing the use of performance-enhancing substances that are grounded primarily in a concern for the athletic advantages that might be gained.
