ABSTRACT:
Many of the metaphors used to understand and explain the stakeholder concept, and business activity in general, are couched in "masculine" language. A reinterpretation of the stakeholder idea using "feminine" or "feminist" descriptions could establish important new possibilities. A feminist reinterpretation offers a different understanding of the identity and meaning of the firm, specifically in terms of its relationship to stakeholder groups and what it means for a firm to succeed. The alternatives proposed converge with recent trends in the broader management literature and offer practical guidance for firms encountering a myriad of challenges in the increasingly complex and global marketplace.
