ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study was to conduct a two-stage program evaluation of a season-long sport psychology internship. Stage one utilized quantitative and qualitative questionnaire responses of American NCAA Division I women's basketball athletes and their coach who had a sport psychology intern as part of the coaching staff. Stage two consisted of follow-up personal, standardized interviews (two months postseason) with the coach and selected athletes (one with a receptive and one with a less receptive reaction to the role of the intern). Four substantive areas were addressed including consultant's effectiveness, the types and use of mental skills, rapport with the consultant, and an overall evaluation of the internship program. Results of the quantitative analyses suggested the consultant was perceived as effective and having excellent rapport with the athletes and the coach. Content analysis of the qualitative aspects of the questionnaire as well as the postseason interviews revealed several suggestions for a more effective internship. Results are discussed in terms of the effectiveness of the two-stage process for the evaluation of a sport psychology internship.
