ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the nature of parents' verbal behavior during selected youth sporting events. A systematic observation instrument (Parent Observation Instrument for Sport Events - POISE) was used to observe approximately 250 parents during 147 games/matches from 7 different team sports. The teams comprised of both female and male children aged between 6 and 12 years. The frequency of verbal comments was tabulated and expressed as numbers and percentages according to each sport and by the nature and target of each comment. The results revealed that while most comments were positive overall (47.2%), there was a high percentage of negative comments (34.5%). This indicated a need for ongoing research into the effects of parental verbal behaviors, and a search for an intervention to alleviate negative verbal behaviors.
