ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a group and group/individualized mental training program on the pre-game state anxiety and self-confidence of NCAA Division I female basketball athletes. The Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2, CSAI-2, (Martens, Vealey, and Burton, 1990) was employed to measure the two components of state anxiety (cognitive and somatic) and state self-confidence for the last 9 basketball games during regular season play. All 10 athletes on the team received the group program which began on the official NCAA starting date to the end of regular season play. Three of these ten athletes were also in the group/individualized program which began an individualized staggered intervention program over the last six regular season games. The results were evaluated using planned contrasts based on a 2 by 3, Group by Block, analysis of variance with subjects nested in group. The results indicated a steady decrease in state cognitive and somatic anxiety for athletes in both the group and group/individualized programs. However, only the athletes in the group/individualized program showed a positive change in state self-confidence.
