ABSTRACT:
This research examines reasons given by males and females for terminating or maintaining participation in competitive athletics. A sample of 518 college students responded to open-ended questionnaire items that asked them why they maintained or terminated their participation. For those who maintained participation (persisters) responses categorized as personal fulfillment were given most often. Termination, according to these subjects, was most likely due to other activities that interfered with their participation.
