ABSTRACT:
A coach and 22 members of his team served as subjects in this investigation to determine the effectiveness of self-assessment as means of modifying a coach's behavior. Descriptive-analytic and qualitative techniques including the Self-Assessment Feedback Instrument (SAFI), the Coach's Performance Questionnaire (CPQ), and journaling were utilized to gather data during a collegiate baseball season. Thirteen practices, divided into three phases, were videotaped and coded using the SAFI to record the coach's feedback behaviors. Coding of the videotapes during Phase I, which consisted of four practices, yielded baseline data depicting the coach's behavioral profile. Interpretation of this data led to the formulation of specific goals and strategies directed at modifying the coach's behaviors in Phase I. During Phase II, treatment and intervention were provided after each of five practices. During Phase III, the post-treatment phase, the coach was videotaped during four practices. The coach maintained a journal throughout the season in which his perceptions of the team and the self-assessment process were entered daily. To assess the athletes' perceptions of the coach's behavior, the CPQ was administered prior to Phase I and after Phase III. Upon completion of the study, all measures of Phase I and III data were compared. Descriptive statistics were used in comparisons of the SAFI and CPQ data. Content analysis and the constant comparative method were used to analyze the qualitative data. Analysis of the data indicated that the coach successfully changed all targeted behaviors, improved the quality of his instruction, and experienced heightened self-awareness. Analysis of the coach's journal indicated that the self-assessment process was at once a humbling, instructive, and enlightening experience for the veteran coach. The process of self-assessment was determined to be an effective method of monitoring, modifying, and improving one's own coaching behaviors.
