ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which environmental color influenced performance on mentally and physically demanding tasks. Female (n=17) and male (n=13) undergraduates volunteered to perform the McCloy Blocks Test and the Wingate Anaerobic Test in a green room, an orange room, and a white room. Results indicated that environmental color did not affect performance or arousal. However, color and time did interact to impact positive affect, F(8,232) = 10.90, p less than .0001, and desire to cope, F(2,58) = 15.07, p less than .0001 as measured by the Zuckerman Inventory of Personal Reactions. These results indicate that environmental color does not directly influence task performance. However, the results on affect suggest the possibility that tasks of a longer duration may be indirectly infleunced by environmental color.
