ABSTRACT:
Questionnaires completed by 198 graduate assistant coaches (GACs) at 45 Division I, NCAA member institutions are used to develop a profile of the contemporary GAC in terms of demographics, athletic career, educational background, current status and future plans. Role theory provides the framework for interpreting the data. Findings suggest that during their tenure as GACs most coaches encounter the same role problems experienced by full-time coaches (e.g., role conflict and role strain) as well as a serious role problem of their own: role ambiguity. Data from both closed and open-ended questions provide the basis for an inventory and description of these problems and their ramifications for the contemporary GAC.
