ABSTRACT:
An analysis of scoring statistics for all players over the entire history of the National Basketball Association is presented. The analysis reveals a similar historical evolutionary trend as that of baseball. Improvement of the standards of the game is associated with decline of the extreme and with decreasing variation. The disappearance of 0.400 hitters in professional baseball is associated with decreasing variation in hitting, while the game of baseball itself has undergone dramatic progress was first observed by Gould (1986). Similar conclusions hold for professional basketball. This may be a general result for all team sports akin to biological systems that display decreasing variation while undergoing evolution from its early stages to its maturity.
