ABSTRACT:
This study was designed to explore the differences between athletes' competitive orientation and coaches' perceptions of their athletes' competitive orientation. The Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ) was used to analyze the means of athletes scores and coaches' scores for athletes on competitiveness, win orientation, and goal orientation. The results obtained from athletes (N=85) on six Division 1-AA intercollegiate teams and their head coaches indicated that the athletes' scores for competitiveness were significantly (p less than .016) higher than the coaches' scores for their athletes on the same scale. No significant difference (p less than .016) higher than the coaches' scores for their athletes on the same scale. No significant difference (p less than .016) was noted for either goal or win orientation.
