ABSTRACT:
Participant observation at a trap shooting range reveals complex patterns of interaction among members in an attempt to maintain a once-thriving, class segregated urban sport. The democratization of the sport and the changing class composition of the participants has led to informal rules being in conflict with the formal and competitive aspects of the sport. Rather than segregating shooters, skill in this case serves to integrate the upper and lower skill levels and alienate a middle level of shooters. Highly skilled shooters rely on novice shooters for identification and club survival, while middle level shooters focus on formal rules and competition.
