ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this paper was to explain the emotional phenomena experienced through four stages of athletic injury (initially, the following day, during rehabilitation, and when returning to practice). Twenty-five athletes (males = 16, females = 9) who experienced and subsequently recovered from an athletic injury in the last year were surveyed via questionnaire. Subjects were asked to include which emotions they experienced through the four stages of their injury from 48 possibilities, 36 which were positive and 12 which were negative. The emotional responses experienced at each stage of the injury was largely a function of time; that is negative responses such as frustration, anger, and discouragement decreased from the onset of injury to returning to practice while positive responses such as being hopeful, optimistic, increased through these stages.
