ABSTRACT:
This study examined the relationship between competition and anxiety in adult athletes. Before a 5K running race competitors completed the state portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). They then were asked what finish times they were striving for in the race. After the race, subjects were administered both state and trait measures. For statistical analyses, subjects were divided into (1) successful runners and (2) unsuccessful runners. Significant interactions between anxiety and success were obtained. Runners who met their goals showed decreases in post-race anxiety relative to both pre-race state anxiety and trait anxiety. 'Unsuccessful' runners showed no such change in anxiety level. This contrasts sharply with other studies which have demonstrated increases in anxiety immediately after vigorous exercise.
