ABSTRACT:
Although researchers have long recognized that parents play an important role in the development of children's sport attitudes and behaviors, empirical studies of parental influences are rare. When parents have been studied, the nature of parental influences has been examined in undifferentiated and nonspecific ways. Because this may be due in part to lack of an organizing framework, the present paper reviews relevant literature from the academic achievement area which may help guide future research in sport socialization. Five dimensions of parenting which may influence children's sport achievement are presented and literature relevant to each dimension is discussed. Finally, implications for research and practice are presented.
