ABSTRACT:
Four hundred and ten telephone interviews were conducted with a random sample of subscribers to a metropolitan newspaper in the United States. The respondents were trichotomized among three groups (Reader Types) based on their self-reported reading frequency of the sports section: Regular, Occasional, and Nonreaders. Responses to 20 sports attitude questions revealed that regular sports section readers are interested in a variety of hard and soft sports news. Nonreaders appear to be somewhat interested in soft news. Factor analysis of these 20 items yielded 3 reliable factors: Anti-Sports, Entertainment, and Sports Personalities. Reader Type was found to differentiate the Anti-Sports and Entertainment dimensions but not Sports Personalities.
