ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the potential of behavior modification techniques in promoting exercise adherence. An analysis of related literature suggests a variety of factors are responsible in determining whether or not an individual remains in an exercise program. These summaries, while undoubtedly thorough and informative, provide little information of practical significance to the sport practitioner. For this reason, the present paper focuses on analyzing only those experimental studies that have utilized behavior change strategies to examine the issue of exercise adherence. A thorough library search uncovered 31 experiments directly related to behavior modification and exercise adherence. Each of these studies is critically reviewed in terms of research design, specific behavioral intervention(s) employed, nature of physical activity, participants studied, experimental controls, and results of the experiment. The paper concludes by summarizing the status of behavior modification research in exercise adherence, implications of this approach for the sport practitioner and recommendations for future research.
