ABSTRACT:
This study presents data on the effect of being traded during a season on the playing performance (goals and total points scored) of National Hockey League players. The purpose of the analyses is to replicate a previous study on baseball batting performance which showed improvements in performance following a mid-season trade. The results of the current study demonstrated that the same performance pattern obtained for experienced players only; sub-par performance in the partial season prior to the move was followed by better than average performance in the remainder of the season when compared to performance levels in the seasons prior to and following the trade. Results for less experienced players also showed relatively poor pre-trade performances followed by improvements after joining a new team, although the degree of improvement was insufficient to match performance levels in the seasons before and after the trade. Alternative theoretical interpretations of the findings are discussed.
