ABSTRACT:
Results indicated that lacrosse players' perceptions of their ability was a positive moderator of the influence of coaches' technical-instruction. Specifically, the relationship between coach technical-instruction and the athlete effort increased when athletes perceived themselves to be more able. Similarly, the relationship between coach technical-instruction and the athlete satisfaction was greater for the athletes who considered themselves to be more competent. These results conflict with predictions drawn from work-based concepts of leadership and serve to point out the uniqueness of coaching as a leadership process in sports.
