ABSTRACT:
The socialization experiences of people exhibiting different levels of sport participation were examined using the survey method. The results indicated that sports participation may be influenced essentially by level of encouragement from others and perceived ability. More specifically, the findings suggested a model of sport participation and termination where encouragement from others influences perceived ability which in turn influences level of sport participation. Another variable, aversive socialization experiences, was also examined, but results concerning this variable were not conclusive.
