ABSTRACT:
A brief overview is provided of the reasons for withdrawing from youth sport as determined by several previous research studies, and an argument is made for the use of a classification system for dropouts. The system proposed in this paper would classify dropouts according to the nature of their former involvement in the sport. Three main categories of dropouts are suggested, i.e. The Sampler Dropout, the Participant-Dropout and the Transfer-Dropout. The simultaneous involvements in other sports at the time of withdrawal is considered in proposed further classification of dropouts. It is also argued that the existing theories of sport withdrawal have neglected very influential factors outside the direct sport sphere. The hypothesis is forwarded that nonsport influences, such as work, study and family commitments, are often stronger motives for sport disassociation than dissatisfactions with elements within the sport itself. A comprehensive approach to the study of sport withdrawal should include all potential factors, and a model is proposed that groups these factors into sport-related, milieu-related and developmental categories.
