ABSTRACT:
The study of sport subcultures, socialization into these subcultures, and the practical importance of such inquiry have received considerable attention in the sociology of sport literature. The unique focus of this research was examining the socialization process as it applied to the participants in an avocational subculture. Sociologically, interest resided in the nature of the social structures and social processes and the accouterments in the social world of bicycle racing. In conducting this inquiry the social learning orientation was employed as a theoretical backdrop and both individual and social system explanatory variables were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed.
