ABSTRACT:
In Greece many advanced and elite athletes drop out of sports clubs. It is not known why the athletes drop out, what problems they face, and whether they continue in sports in any capacity. One hundred and thirteen valid questionnaires were collected from ex-athletes in athletics, rowing and volleyball (return rate 87.3 percent). A combination of factors, both inside and outside the sporting environment, was found to influence the disengagement process. However, for analytical purposes, financial constraint was identified as a primary factor. The majority of former athletes take part, receationally, in various physical activities and sports. The worst reaction to smoking and weight-control was shown by ex-volleyball players (p is less than 0.05, p is less than 0.01, respectively).
