ABSTRACT:
Vocabulary and academic interest differences of athletes and nonathletes were empirically tested using a sample of 2,026 nonathletes and 434 athletes. This inquiry focused on three interrelated dimensions: (1) vocabulary comprehension, (2) reading orientation, and (3) writing orientation. Two types of findings are reported: (1) athletes vs. nonathletes, and (2) athletes competing in fifteen different sports. Athletes vis-a-vis their nonathlete counterparts scored statistically (and substantively) lower on the measure of vocabulary comprehension but not on indices of writing and reading. Comparing athletes competing in different sports failed to produce consistently significant outcomes. The fact that athletes' vocabulary comprehension was about 75 percent that of nonathletes suggests the major area where attention and intervention could be beneficial.
