ABSTRACT:
Using the structure of Prus' career contingency model, this study investigated the initial and continuing factors that influenced women and men to enter and continue in the career of collegiate sport official. Officials (n=165) from Division 1 football, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball responded to questions derived from Prus' model. Results showed that, by and large, officials sought out or were recruited into the career of official. An ideology of challenge and fitness, a commitment to sport, and the relationships developed as an official were all important to the officials' continuing participation. Conclusions were related to Prus' model of career contingencies.
