ABSTRACT:
This paper analyzes participation in sports as a form of leisure among a sample of adults from the general population in a midwestern state. The focus of the paper is on perceived deficits in the quality of one's life as factors that might predispose one toward sports (both active participation and watching sports on television). In other words, the paper investigates sports involvement as a possible form of escapism. The data were gathered through telephone interviews (random-digit sample). The findings offer no clear support for the compensatory theory. There was no consistent pattern for persons involved in sports to score lower than nonparticipants on a series of quality-of-life indicators. The data were displayed in several formats in an attempt to isolate any compensatory patterns.
