ABSTRACT:
A sample of 825 Japanese college students responded to a thirty-two item Likert questionnaire focusing on various features of college sports. The instrument was divided into six subscales: (1) Intellect, (2) Athletes' Traits, (3) Morality, (4) Lifestyle, (5) Tradition, School Spirit, and College Life, and (6) Business of Athletics. In general, the responses indicated that intercollegiate athletics are positively perceived. To analyze differences by sex and major, a two-way analysis of variance statistical design was employed. Subscale differences were found for major and sex; there were no interaction effects. Regression analysis was performed to determine the variables most predictive of attitudes toward intercollegiate athletics. Behavioral indicants vis-a-vis socio-demographic factors were most salient.
