ABSTRACT:
This paper presents ideas about the way performance outcomes interact with the motives of an athlete. The discussion provides inferences concerning how the athlete perceives evaluation and how those perceptions may in turn modify feelings about performance as well as the performance itself. Considerable research suggests that causal attributions appear to be critical to understanding sport participation and behavior. Using published literature, the paper focuses on attributional approaches to motivation in sport, the concept of learned helplessness, and the main implications of these findings for the coach/practitioner in the sporting environment.
