ABSTRACT:
American Universities with a reputation for successful athletic programs ( and those aspiring to such success) often face the temptation to compromise academic standards in the recruitment and education of excellent athletes. This study examines the importance of an academic orientation in college to subsequent perceived well being of former college athletes. Measures of current life satisfaction and self esteem of former athletes were correlated with retrospective self-reports of grade point average, participation in course selection, and other variables related to academic orientation. Results indicated that despite all the other likely influences on perceived well-being in early adulthood, a former athlete's academic experience would appear to have a significant impact.
