ABSTRACT:
This study was undertaken in order to ascertain whether differences exist in the reasons males and females run, and in the benefits they obtain from an involvement in this recreational activity. All runners (153 males, 65 females) who completed a half marathon race were surveyed by postal questionnaire. One hundred and sixty seven completed questionnaires were returned giving an overall response rate of 77%. Females were more likely to start to run to improve appearance whereas males were more likely to start to keep fit for other sports. A greater proportion of females experienced improvements in well being, self confidence and in their family and social lives. The finding that the two sexes did not differ on most of the demographic variables measured meant that a number of confounding variables present in previous studies were controlled for.
