ABSTRACT:
Uses student attendance at two university basketball games, played during different years, to examine the characteristics of occasional and persistent direct sport consumers. Also looks at the characteristics exhibited by such consumers when a 'star' performer is present. Results support the contention that 'lifestyle' and identification' are important factors in sport consumption. Finds that preferences for action-oriented activities' and 'social support' are also important factors, and are particularly relevant for describing the persistent consumer. The presence of a 'star' performer does not attract disproportionately larger numbers from student groups that typically do not attend sporting events.
