ABSTRACT:
In 1971, McNair, Lorr and Droppleman published the Profile of Mood States (POMS). It was originally intended as a means of measuring right now kinds of mood states in people undergoing counseling or psychotherapy. Its popularity in sport research is due in large part to the continuing efforts of William Morgan and various associates. The POMS has been cited in 56 sport-related published papers since its introduction to sport in 1975. Participants in 19 different sport areas have served as subjects. Seventeen studies involved runners (including marathoners and ultramarathoners), seven studies each involved exercise and fitness participants and football players, four involved basketball players, gymnasts, karate competitors, netballers, oarsmen, rodeo athletes, soccer players, speed skaters, triathletes, and volleyball players. Each of these papers is summarized by sport. Additionally, several general articles relating to psychometric properties of the POMS are included.
