ABSTRACT:
Ascertains the effect of imagery rehearsal and adjustments in physiological arousal on the reduction or elimination of warm-up decrement (WUD). Female varsity softball players (n=40) practice 20 trials of batting with a pitching machine, and then rest for 15 minutes. During the last five minutes of the rest period, an equal number of subjects read magazines (control), pedal a bicycle ergometer (arousal), or visualize themselves hitting pitched balls (relevant imagery) or catching fly balls (irrelevant imagery). Postrest performance reveals higher levels of WUD for the 'control' and 'irrelevant imagery' conditions than for the 'arousal' and 'relevant imagery' conditions. Repeat testing six months later shows no significant differences in WUD.
