ABSTRACT:
Much of the contemporary social psychology of sport is concerned with the investigation of individual patters of behavior and very little is concerned with the relationship that exists between individuals of inter-individual behavior on the one hand and the large scale social context on the other. In particular, sport social psychologists' over-reliance on psychology has distorted the way the subject has developed, making for a focus on behavior rather than experiences and leading to mechanistic, individualistic approaches and an incapacity to consider, let alone handle, the social environment. Specifically, the study of interaction is ignored. This paper explores this imbalance and presents a case for the need to redress it. In addition, a model based on principles of symbolic interactionism is offered as a potential means for rectifying some of the problems besetting sport psychology. Criticizes the excessive concern of contemporary social psychology of sport with the investigation of individual patterns of behaviour, rather than with the interaction between individuals. Contends that the over-reliance of sport social psychologists on psychology has resulted in a focus on behaviour rather than experiences, and has led to mechanistic, individualistic approaches and an incapacity to consider the social environment. Explores this imbalance and presents a case for the need to redress it. Offers a model based on the principles of symbolic interactionism as a potential means for rectifying some of the problems of sport social psychology.
