ABSTRACT:
Using the Personality Research Form, this study examined certain general personality characteristics of 290 adult endurance athletes who were participants in either a swimming meet, a bicycle race, a running race, or a triathlon. Multivariate analyses revealed some significant differences as a function of sport and gender; however, striking similarities occurred in the personality pattern across both sport and gender. Further analyses as a function of age and gender indicated that the younger women in the sample were responding somewhat differently from others. Results are discussed in terms of a composite picture of the adult athlete - termed the super-adherer - as well as differences among sports that might be useful in predicting, as well as enhancing, adherence to exercise programs. Examines the personality characteristics of adult endurance athletes. Participants (n=290) in either a swimming meet, a bicycle race, a running race, or a triathlon respond to seven scales selected from Form A of Jackson's (1984) Personality Research Form: achievement, aggression, autonomy, dominance, endurance, harm avoidance, and play. Finds that the athletes as a group differ from the general population on all seven scales, and notes striking similarities in personality pattern across both sport and gender. Results suggest that the 'super-adherer' is highly motivated to achieve not only in athletic activities, but in everyday life as well.
