ABSTRACT:
Spectator violence at sporting events continues to be a serious problem throughout the world. The purpose of this study was to examine the theoretical and empirical relationship between stages of moral judgement development and attitudes toward unacceptable spectator behavior in sport. Four hypotheses were developed and tested in this study. A total of 294 male and female spectators and non-spectators were shown a series of twelve slides that clearly depicted unacceptable spectator behavior in sport. The subjects rated the unacceptability-acceptability of the slides on a scale of 1 to 4 (totally unacceptable to totally acceptable). Subjects were also administered Rest's Defining Issues Test to determine their level of moral judgement development by grade level. None of the stated hypotheses were clearly supported. The results of this study suggest that there appears to be no significant relationship between level of moral judgement development and attitudes toward unacceptable spectator behavior in sport. It was concluded that follow-up studies using other variables such as chronological age are warranted since the cognitive-developmental paradigm has opened up alternative research avenues in the study of player aggression and could likely do the same for the study of spectator behavior in sport. Investigates the theoretical and empirical relationship between stages of moral judgment development and attitudes toward unacceptable spectator behaviour in sport. Male and female spectators n=294) view a series of twelve slides which depict unacceptable spectator behaviour in sport. Subjects rate the unacceptability-acceptability of the slides and complete Rest's Defining Issues Test to determine their level of moral judgment development. Results suggest that there appears to be no significant relationship between level of moral judgment development and attitude toward unacceptable spectator behaviour in sport.
