ABSTRACT:
Ninety age group competitive swimmers, separated into three groups by age, participated in a study to investigate whether a group-oriented behavior management strategy modified their behavior in a swim practice setting. An A-B-A-B reversal design was used in which swimmers' good behavior was systematically and consistently rewarded with permission to leave practice early at predesignated intervals. The results indicated that the misbehavior of "walking on the bottom or stopping" was significantly reduced during treatment phases for older and middle age groups of swimmers. Younger swimmers, who were not badly misbehaved to begin with, responded to treatment only marginally. The finding was important in that it demonstrated adaptability of the group-oriented strategy to setting other than classrooms in which students were stationary and not allowed to move about freely.
