ABSTRACT:
The influence that competition day practice has on the activation and performance of swimmers was investigated. Members of a collegiate swimming team were administered brisk workouts of 3,000 yard (2742 m) four to six hours prior to competition in four of the team's scheduled home swim meets. Prior to competing in their first event, the swimmers completed an adjective check list which was used to measure activation. The statistical analysis indicated that the practice condition did reduce feelings of tension and anxiety, but no significant relationships were found between performance and activation.
