ABSTRACT:
McCutcheon's Sport Psychology Quiz (SPQ) was administered to 227 introductory psychology students. A factor analysis of the introductory student responses revealed 15 factors with eigenvalues ranging from 1.00 to 1.93, and a sixteenth factor with an eigenvalue of 2.89. Reliability was determined and an item analysis was conduced. A coefficient alpha of .08 was obtained. The mean difficulty level was .50; however, the mean discrimination level was .17. McCutcheon's claim that the SPQ is a reasonable satisfactory measure of knowledge concerning sport psychology is refuted. The discussion includes analyses and a critique of the SPQ, descriptive data, as well as elaborations on test construction, reliability, validity, and item analysis. Tests the value of McCutcheon's (1985) Sport Psychology Quiz SPQ) as a measure of knowledge in the field of sport psychology. Administers the SPQ to students (n=227) enrolled in an introductory psychology course. Analyzes the responses by means of descriptive statistics, a factor analysis, an item analysis, and an estimation of validity and reliability. Finds that the data collected and the results obtained in this study are inconsistent with McCutcheon's findings. Refutes the notion that the SPQ is a reasonably satisfactory measure of knowledge of sport psychology, and concludes that this instrument requires major revisions.
