ABSTRACT:
A group of 944 college students who attended a collegiate basketball game were compared to a control group of 925 to assess differences between those attending and those not attending a college basketball game. Various demographic factors were compared as well as personality types from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Differences were found in race, gender, local residence, distance from home town, declared major, and MBTI characteristics. Many interesting interactions also emerged. Compared academic achievement, demographic variables, and vocational interest of undergraduate students who attended and who did not attend a college basketball game. Personality characteristics, assessed using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicators, were also examined. Found differences with respect to race, gender, local residence, distance from home town, declared major, and MBTI characteristics. Found that attendance at games was not related to class standing or academic achievement. Concludes that sport consumption would be greatest where there is a meaningful de facto association between individual and community or group.
