ABSTRACT:
The present study examined the relationships among the subscales of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 and the effects of pre-competitive state anxiety and self-confidence on golf performance and the effects of performance on the post-competitive state anxiety and self-confidence. Collegiate golfers completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 immediately prior to and immediately following each 18-hole tournament round. Data were collected from 10 competitive rounds during the fall season. The performance measure was represented by the total score for each round. Multiple regression analyses were employed to determine the predictive values of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) sub-components and golf performance in assessing subsequent performance and anxiety respectively. Pre-competitive measures did not predict golf performance but golf performance was a significant predictor of post-round cognitive state anxiety and self-confidence. Results are discussed in terms of future applications of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2. Examined the relationships among the subscales of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2, the effects of pre-competitive state anxiety, self confidence on golf performance, and the effects of performance on post-competitive state anxiety and self confidence. Collegiate golfers (n=7) completed the inventory immediately following each tournament round. The performance measure was represented by the total score for each round. Analysis indicated that pre-competitive measures did not predict golf performance but golf performance was a significant predictor of post-round cognitive state anxiety and self-confidence.
