ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this paper is to describe two observation codes which can be used in physical education and athletic settings to systematically and objectively evaluate athlete and coach behavior. Contrary to other observation systems developed for sport environments, the Athletic Observation Code (AOC) and the Coach Observation Code (COC) divide behavior into two categories: (a) activity focus (what the group as a whole is doing at the time of observation), and (b) behavior (what the group as a whole is doing at the time of observation). The structure of both codes are outlined as well as a description of how to utilize the codes and analyze the data from them. Instructions regarding how to train individuals in the use of the AOC and COC and how to establish inter-observer reliability are provided. Suggestions for application of the AOC and COC in physical education and athletic environments are given. Describes two observation codes: Athlete Observation Code AOC), and Coach Observation Code (COC) that have been used to evaluate coach and athlete behaviour in physical education and athletic environments. Provides the operational definitions of the activity focus, and behaviour of athletes and coaches. Describes the structure of both codes and how the codes should be utilized. Suggests ways in which the codes can be applied in physical education and athletic situations.
